Flyby

by Bonnie Riedinger

He’s a whirligig on a sugar high,

A tuning fork come to dine,

A vertiginous blur

Spiked in his drink

Like a Mai Tai parasol.

He may hover and sip

As his wings beat a brisk bombination,

But soon he’ll take off

With a cartoon zoom

For my neighbor’s more alluring

Red bed.
